The player can level up by talking to a trainer when they have enough XP and gold. Each town has a trainer and each trainer specializes in raising specific skills. The max level is 15, after which trainers will refuse to train you.
Agreeing to train will:
- raise level by 1
- give you up to 45 points to allocate in skills (there is a bug which prevents this from working properly)
- raise Life by 5-8 with a bonus from constitution
- raise Magic by 2-4 with a bonus from mental strength
- raise a random, non-20 stat with a random chance

While the XP needed curve looks handcrafted (doesn't follow a formula), the gold needed can be derived as follows:
gold needed = floor(xp needed / (current level + 8))
The amount of gold needed is affected by charisma
